First, start by downloading and printing this basic
FAMILY TREE TEMPLATE.
Then speak to your elders and other relatives, start with your parents, filling the tree backwards as you go. Ask them for as much information on their parents, grandparents, and great grandparents that they know. Try to get the maiden names for the women -- this is important as it makes finding the right couples easier, without confusion.
Once you have the basic tree filled out, you can then start working on your larger tree, as you might need to go back 5 to 15 generations to find Native ancestry (depending on when your ancestors arrived in North America).

DO NOT SKIP generations.
Use what you have, confirm it is correct,
then go back, one generation at a time.
